When people are like “OMG, this story was set in Europe so to be true to it, any rendition of it has to be set in Europe, don’t complain”, I’m like have you never heard of this spectacular series? Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child, shown by HBO, took classic fairy tales and gave them an African, Latino, or Asian twist. Sometimes, they even genderbent the main character of the story so that the hero became the heroine (Aladdin, Robin Hood, and the Prince and the Pauper). And they were every bit as enjoyable (sometimes even more so) then what Disney came out with. All of this during the 90s. And don’t tell me that white kids wouldn’t enjoy this. First of all, too much of media already caters to the white demographic and secondly, I’m white and I will tell you that, as a child and even now as an adult, I would get up early every morning this show was on, so that I wouldn’t miss it and I enjoyed the hell out of it. So, yes, it is entirely possible for white kids to enjoy this show. You can take classic fairy tales and give them another ethnic twist and have them be just as enjoyable as the original. Sometimes, they’re even better than the original. So please put your tired argument away and come up with something better.
